UI/UX Designer job description template (India, 2026)

A UI/UX Designer job description written for Indian companies: responsibilities, requirements, CTC and notice-period framing, five screening questions, and the full text to copy or post on ofper.

Last updated 3 September 2026. Competitor pricing and plan limits are re-verified against each vendor’s own pages.

A UI/UX Designer owns how the product looks and works for users — research, flows, wireframes, high-fidelity screens in Figma, a design system and the handoff to engineers — designing first for the phone in an Indian user's hand rather than the designer's monitor.

A good UI/UX Designer job description states what the person will actually do in the first six months, the experience that is genuinely required rather than wished for, the CTC range and how it is split, and the location and working pattern — candidates in India filter on those four things before reading anything else.

What does a UI/UX Designer do?

A product team hires its first designer when the engineers' screens work but users get lost, when the app looks like six different products, or when a redesign is needed and nobody can decide what good looks like. The designer talks to users, maps the flows, wireframes, designs the screens in Figma, builds the component library that keeps the product consistent, and works with engineers so what ships matches what was designed — including on a mid-range Android phone.

The posting should state the product and platforms, the current design state — no system, a partial one, a legacy — the tools, the research access, the team and how the designer works with the PM and engineers. It should also be clear about the 'UI/UX' breadth: in an SME one designer does research, flows, visual design and handoff. Candidates who specialise in one of those should know.

UI/UX Designer responsibilities

Written as work the person does, not qualities they have. A responsibility a candidate can picture is one they can decide about.

  • Own the end-to-end design of [product / area]: research, information architecture, user flows, wireframes, high-fidelity screens and prototypes in Figma.
  • Talk to users and watch them use the product regularly; turn observations into design changes with a stated rationale.
  • Design for the devices users actually have — phone-first at narrow widths, low-end Android, slow networks — and for accessibility: contrast, touch targets, readable type, screen-reader semantics.
  • Build and maintain the design system and component library, and keep the product visually consistent across screens and platforms.
  • Work daily with the PM and engineers: clarify specs, review implementation against the design, and adjust for technical constraints without losing the intent.
  • Design the empty, loading, error and edge states, not only the happy path, and document them in the handoff.
  • Produce marketing and communication assets when the small team needs them — landing pages, app-store screenshots, emails — within the brand.
  • Measure design outcomes with the PM and analyst: task completion, drop-off, support tickets about confusion.

UI/UX Designer requirements and qualifications

Keep the required list to what you would actually reject a candidate for. Everything else goes under nice to have — a long required list mostly filters out the people you wanted.

  • 2 to 5 years designing shipped digital products, with a portfolio showing at least one product you designed end to end and the reasoning behind it.
  • Fluent in Figma — components, variants, auto layout, prototyping — and in handing off to engineers.
  • Demonstrated mobile-first design for real users on low-end devices, and working knowledge of accessibility.
  • Research skills: can plan and run a usability session and turn it into decisions.
  • Communicates design rationale clearly to non-designers, in writing and in reviews, and takes feedback without losing the intent.
  • Willing to work [from our office / hybrid / remote with overlap hours].

Nice to have

  • Experience with our domain and its users — first-time internet users, SMB owners, students, patients.
  • Front-end fluency — HTML and CSS, or a component framework — enough to review implementation precisely.
  • Experience building a design system from scratch in a small team.

Salary, CTC and terms for a UI/UX Designer in India

State a CTC range. Postings without one get fewer and worse-matched applications, and the range is the first thing an Indian candidate looks for. Say how the CTC is made up — fixed, variable, and any statutory components — so the in-hand figure is not a surprise at offer stage.

  • State the CTC range with fixed and variable and any ESOP. Designer salaries in India vary widely by company type; the range gets applicants who fit.
  • State the design maturity honestly — no system, a partial one, a legacy — and the research access; designers who expect a research team and find none leave.
  • State the work-from-office policy and whether notice buyout is offered.
  • State the interview process, including any portfolio review and design exercise, and its length.

Screening questions for UI/UX Designer applicants

Five questions is the ceiling on ofper, and it is the right ceiling: a form that asks more than that costs applications. Use them for the things that decide a shortlist, not for anything the resume already says.

Each question is one of the five screening slots an ofper job allows. Knockouts move an application to Screened out — nothing is deleted.

Questions, answered straight

What should a UI/UX Designer job description include?

The product and platforms, the current design state, the tools, research access, the team and working relationships, the breadth expected (research, flows, visual, handoff, some marketing assets), the work-from-office policy, the interview process and the CTC range. Designers decide on design maturity and breadth.

UI designer, UX designer or product designer?

In an SME one person does all of it, and Indian postings mostly say UI/UX Designer. Product Designer is the equivalent title in product companies. Whichever title you use, state the full breadth so that visual-only or research-only specialists know what the role is.

Should I ask for a design exercise?

A short one, on a real flow from your product, done live in an hour — or a paper form design in the interview. Long unpaid take-home redesigns are resented and rarely predictive; the portfolio walk-through with hard questions tells you more.
