Accountant job description template (India, 2026)

A Accountant job description written for Indian companies: responsibilities, requirements, CTC and notice-period framing, five screening questions, and the full text to copy or post on ofper.

Last updated 3 September 2026. Competitor pricing and plan limits are re-verified against each vendor’s own pages.

An Accountant in an Indian SME keeps the books current and the statutory calendar met — day-to-day entries, bank reconciliation, GST and TDS filings, vendor and salary payments, and the monthly close that the founder and the CA depend on.

A good Accountant job description states what the person will actually do in the first six months, the experience that is genuinely required rather than wished for, the CTC range and how it is split, and the location and working pattern — candidates in India filter on those four things before reading anything else.

The full template is below as plain text to copy, or post it on ofper as a job with the screening questions already attached. ofper is free with unlimited jobs.

What does a Accountant do?

For a company of 20 to 200 people, the Accountant is usually the entire finance function below the founder and the external chartered accountant. The work is concrete and calendar-driven: every invoice and expense entered in Tally or Zoho Books, every bank account reconciled, GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filed on time, TDS deducted and deposited, PF and ESI challans paid, and a clean monthly close handed to whoever prepares the MIS and the audit.

The job description should say which software the company runs, which filings the person owns end to end versus prepares for the CA, and whether payroll processing sits here. Those three facts decide whether an experienced candidate applies and whether a new hire is productive in the first month.

Accountant responsibilities

Written as work the person does, not qualities they have. A responsibility a candidate can picture is one they can decide about.

  • Record all transactions — sales, purchases, expenses, receipts and payments — in [Tally / Zoho Books / other] daily, with correct ledgers, GST classification and supporting documents filed.
  • Reconcile every bank account and payment gateway weekly, and resolve unmatched entries before month-end.
  • Prepare and file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B on time, reconcile input credit against GSTR-2B, and follow up with vendors on mismatches.
  • Deduct TDS correctly on vendor, rent, professional and salary payments; deposit it monthly; and prepare the quarterly TDS returns for filing.
  • Process vendor payments on the agreed cycle, maintain the payables ageing, and keep the receivables ageing current with follow-up notes for the sales team.
  • Prepare the monthly PF and ESI challans and support payroll processing with attendance and deduction inputs.
  • Close the books monthly — accruals, prepaid, depreciation, provisions — and produce the trial balance and basic MIS for the founder.
  • Prepare schedules and respond to queries for the statutory audit, tax audit and any GST or income-tax notices, working with the external CA.

Accountant requirements and qualifications

Keep the required list to what you would actually reject a candidate for. Everything else goes under nice to have — a long required list mostly filters out the people you wanted.

  • B.Com or M.Com, with 2 to 5 years in an accounts role where you owned bookkeeping and at least GST or TDS compliance end to end.
  • Working command of Tally Prime or Zoho Books, including GST setup, e-invoicing where applicable and bank reconciliation.
  • Practical knowledge of GST returns, TDS sections and rates, PF and ESI, and the monthly and quarterly compliance calendar.
  • Strong Excel: pivot tables, lookups and the discipline to keep a working schedule that ties to the books.
  • Accuracy and follow-through: reconciliations actually completed, filings actually on time.
  • Comfortable working with an external CA and with bank and vendor contacts.

Nice to have

  • Experience in a CA firm's accounts outsourcing practice, or with clients in our industry.
  • Familiarity with e-way bills, e-invoicing portals and the income-tax TRACES portal.
  • Exposure to payroll software and to preparing MIS for management.

Salary, CTC and terms for a Accountant in India

State a CTC range. Postings without one get fewer and worse-matched applications, and the range is the first thing an Indian candidate looks for. Say how the CTC is made up — fixed, variable, and any statutory components — so the in-hand figure is not a surprise at offer stage.

  • State a CTC range and the split into fixed, statutory components (PF, gratuity accrual) and any bonus. Accounts candidates read a CTC more carefully than anyone and will calculate the in-hand figure before applying.
  • State working days and hours, and whether month-end and filing-deadline weeks involve longer hours. It is normal in this role; saying so is fair.
  • State whether the role is in-office. Most SME accounts roles are, for documents, cheques and bank work; say if any days are remote.
  • Notice period: 30 days is typical. Ask for the candidate's in screening — accounts people often serve 60 days, and a mid-month join complicates a close.

Screening questions for Accountant applicants

Five questions is the ceiling on ofper, and it is the right ceiling: a form that asks more than that costs applications. Use them for the things that decide a shortlist, not for anything the resume already says.

Each question is one of the five screening slots an ofper job allows. Knockouts move an application to Screened out — nothing is deleted.
QuestionTypeKnockoutWhy it earns a slot
Have you personally prepared and filed GST returns (GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B) for at least 1 year?Yes / No (pass: Yes)YesThe single most common gap between the resume and the work: 'GST knowledge' often means having seen it done.
How many years of accounts experience do you have in Tally or Zoho Books?Number (pass: 2+)YesThe company's software is the daily tool; two years is the floor for owning the books unsupervised.
Have you handled TDS deduction, monthly deposit and quarterly return preparation?Yes / No (pass: Yes)NoNot a knockout if the CA files the returns, but it decides the interview's first ten minutes.
What is your current notice period, in days?Number (pass: 0 to 90)NoPlans the joining date around a month-end close.

Questions, answered straight

What should an Accountant job description include for an Indian company?

The accounting software, which filings the person owns end to end (GST, TDS, PF and ESI), whether payroll processing sits with them, how they work with the external CA, and the CTC with its split. Candidates decide on software and scope of ownership before anything else.

What qualification should I ask for?

B.Com or M.Com with two to five years of hands-on experience is the practical requirement. A CA Inter or a CA firm background is a plus, not a must. Ask for evidence of filing GST and handling TDS personally rather than for a qualification.

Should I hire an Accountant or use a CA firm?

Most SMEs need both once transactions exceed what a part-time bookkeeper can handle: an in-house Accountant for daily entries, reconciliations, payments and filings, and a CA firm for audit, tax opinions and complex compliance. State in the posting which parts the in-house role owns.
