Counselling and conversion
- Describe your funnel in your last role: leads assigned, connects, counselling sessions, enrolments, and revenue in a typical month and your best month.
- A strong answer: Real numbers at each stage and awareness of where the funnel leaked. Counsellors who have carried a target know their conversion rates.
- Role-play: I am a parent whose child wants your course but I think it is too expensive and unproven. Counsel me.
- A strong answer: Listens first, addresses the real concern — outcomes, risk — with honest specifics, offers options such as EMI, and does not disparage alternatives or invent placement claims.
- Tell me about a student you advised not to enrol, or to choose a different course. Why, and what happened?
- A strong answer: Integrity and judgement; the best counsellors have these stories and they produce referrals.
- How did you follow up with a lead who was interested but kept deferring?
- A strong answer: A cadence with a reason for each touch — a webinar, a deadline, a success story — and knowing when to stop.
Knowledge, ethics and process
- What do you know about our courses, and what would you say to a student who asks whether they will get a job after it?
- A strong answer: Preparation and an honest answer — what support exists, what the data says, what depends on the student — without a guarantee.
- A manager asks you to tell leads that a discount ends today when it does not. What do you do?
- A strong answer: Declines, explains the trust cost, uses real urgency instead. The ethics of education sales are tested here directly.
- How did you use the CRM during a call, and how did you keep follow-ups from slipping?
- A strong answer: Live logging, next-step dates, a morning review of due follow-ups.
- A student enrolled and then asked for a refund within a week. What did you do, and what did you learn?
- A strong answer: Handled it honestly, understood the mismatch, and adjusted their counselling to prevent it — refunds are the cost of over-selling.
Resilience and fit
- Counselling involves a lot of no and a lot of evenings. How have you sustained it, and what does the shift mean for you practically?
- A strong answer: A realistic, specific answer about the schedule and a personal system for consistency.
- Tell me about a month you missed target. What did you change?
- A strong answer: Ownership and a specific change — more sessions, better qualification, a different follow-up cadence.
- What makes a counsellor trusted by parents?
- A strong answer: Honesty, listening, knowing the course, following through — and awareness that trust converts better than pressure.
- Where do you want this role to lead?
- A strong answer: A path — senior counsellor, team lead, admissions manager — that the company can support.
Scorecard for Academic Counsellor interviews
Score each candidate on these five criteria, one to four, straight after the interview and before talking to the other interviewers. Written scores taken independently are what make a panel decision defensible; a discussion first produces one opinion with several signatures.
- Funnel command: knows their conversion numbers and where leads leak.
- Counselling skill: listens, addresses real concerns, offers honest options.
- Integrity: refuses false urgency and false promises; has advised against enrolment.
- Process discipline: live CRM use and follow-up cadence.
- Resilience and fit: sustains the shift and rejection with a system.
Screen before you interview
Most Academic Counsellor interviews that go badly were avoidable at the application stage. The job description template for this role carries five screening questions that settle the deal-breakers — notice period, location, the one or two hard requirements — before anyone books a slot.
- Have you worked in academic counselling, admissions or education sales with a monthly enrolment or revenue target for at least 1 year? — knockout
- Are you able to work [evening shifts and weekends / the stated shift] from [our office / home with a stable connection]? — knockout
- Roughly how many enrolments did you close in your best month? — for context
- What is your current notice period, in days? — for context
Questions, answered straight
What is the best interview question for an Academic Counsellor?
Ask for their funnel numbers — leads, connects, sessions, enrolments — and then role-play a sceptical parent worried about cost and outcomes. The numbers show whether they have carried a target; the role-play shows whether they counsel honestly or pressure.
How do I assess integrity in a counsellor interview?
Ask directly what they would do if a manager told them to claim a discount ends today when it does not, and ask about a student they advised not to enrol. Counsellors who refuse false urgency and have turned students away are the ones parents trust and refer.
How do I reduce early attrition in counsellors?
State the evening and weekend shift and the incentive structure including refund clawbacks in the posting and again in the interview, and ask what the shift means for them practically. Most early exits are shift surprises and incentive disappointments.
