Sales Executive job description template (India, 2026)

A Sales Executive job description written for Indian companies: responsibilities, requirements, CTC and notice-period framing, five screening questions, and the full text to copy or post on ofper.

Last updated 3 September 2026. Competitor pricing and plan limits are re-verified against each vendor’s own pages.

A Sales Executive in an Indian SME owns a set of leads or a territory end to end — first call, demo or visit, negotiation, closing and the follow-up that turns one order into a repeat customer.

A good Sales Executive job description states what the person will actually do in the first six months, the experience that is genuinely required rather than wished for, the CTC range and how it is split, and the location and working pattern — candidates in India filter on those four things before reading anything else.

What does a Sales Executive do?

In most Indian companies with fewer than 200 people, the Sales Executive is the revenue engine: the person who takes a lead from the marketing team, a referral, or a cold list and turns it into a signed order. The work is a mix of phone, WhatsApp, email and, depending on the product, in-person visits. Targets are monthly, reviewed weekly, and the variable part of pay depends on them.

The role sits between marketing (which produces leads) and operations or delivery (which fulfils what was sold). A good Sales Executive keeps the CRM honest, sells what the company can actually deliver, and hands over a clean order rather than a promise the delivery team has to renegotiate.

Sales Executive responsibilities

Written as work the person does, not qualities they have. A responsibility a candidate can picture is one they can decide about.

  • Work every inbound lead within the agreed response time and keep a daily record of calls, meetings and next steps in the CRM.
  • Run first conversations, qualify budget, authority, need and timeline, and move qualified leads to a demo, a site visit or a proposal.
  • Prepare quotations and proposals within the approved pricing and discount limits, and get anything outside those limits approved before it is sent.
  • Negotiate commercial terms — price, payment schedule, delivery dates — and close orders against a monthly target.
  • Hand over signed orders to operations with complete details: scope, commitments made, contact person, payment terms.
  • Follow up on payments due from the customers you closed until collection, in coordination with accounts.
  • Maintain relationships with existing customers for repeat orders, upsells and referrals.
  • Report weekly on pipeline, conversions, lost deals and the reasons for them.

Sales Executive requirements and qualifications

Keep the required list to what you would actually reject a candidate for. Everything else goes under nice to have — a long required list mostly filters out the people you wanted.

  • 1 to 4 years of B2B or B2C sales experience with an individual target, and a record of meeting it that you can describe month by month.
  • Comfortable selling by phone and in person, and writing clear proposals and follow-up emails in English.
  • Fluent in English and Hindi; a regional language relevant to the territory is often essential for field roles.
  • Disciplined about CRM entry — every call, every next step, every day.
  • Able to explain a product's value in the customer's terms rather than reading a feature list.
  • Graduate in any discipline.

Nice to have

  • Experience in our industry or selling to the same buyer — a head start on the objections.
  • Familiarity with a CRM such as Zoho, LeadSquared or HubSpot.
  • A two-wheeler and a valid licence, for territories that need field visits.

Salary, CTC and terms for a Sales Executive in India

State a CTC range. Postings without one get fewer and worse-matched applications, and the range is the first thing an Indian candidate looks for. Say how the CTC is made up — fixed, variable, and any statutory components — so the in-hand figure is not a surprise at offer stage.

  • State the CTC as fixed plus variable, and say what the variable is worth at 100% of target. A posting that says only the on-target total gets applicants who assume it is all fixed and leave when they learn otherwise.
  • Say how and when incentives are paid — monthly, quarterly, on order or on collection. Payment on collection is common in Indian SMEs and should be stated up front.
  • Field roles: state whether travel, fuel and phone are reimbursed and on what basis. Statutory components (PF, ESI where applicable) are part of the CTC; say so.
  • Notice period: 30 days is standard at this level. Ask for the candidate's current notice period in screening rather than discovering a 90-day notice at offer.

Screening questions for Sales Executive applicants

Five questions is the ceiling on ofper, and it is the right ceiling: a form that asks more than that costs applications. Use them for the things that decide a shortlist, not for anything the resume already says.

Each question is one of the five screening slots an ofper job allows. Knockouts move an application to Screened out — nothing is deleted.
QuestionTypeKnockoutWhy it earns a slot
Do you have at least 1 year of sales experience with an individual monthly or quarterly target?Yes / No (pass: Yes)YesThe one hard requirement. Fresher applicants are welcome on a separate posting, not this one.
What is your current notice period, in days?Number (pass: 0 to 60)NoFor context, not a knockout — a 90-day notice is a scheduling fact you want before the first interview, not at offer.
Are you able to work from [City] and travel within the territory as required?Yes / No (pass: Yes)YesLocation and travel are the most common reasons a sales offer is declined. Settle them first.
What is your current annual CTC, in lakhs? (Enter a whole number)Number (pass: 0+)NoNot a knockout. It tells you whether your range is realistic for this candidate before either side invests an interview.

Questions, answered straight

What should a Sales Executive job description include?

The territory or lead source, the target and how often it is measured, the split of phone and field work, the CTC as fixed plus variable with the on-target variable stated, how incentives are paid, and the location. Those are the facts Indian sales candidates decide on. Everything else is secondary.

Should I mention the sales target in the job posting?

Yes, at least as an order of magnitude. Candidates who have carried a target will ask in the first interview anyway, and a posting that states it attracts people who have hit similar numbers and filters out those who have not.

Is a Sales Executive the same as a Business Development Executive?

In Indian usage, Sales Executive usually means closing inbound or assigned leads, and Business Development Executive leans towards finding new accounts and partnerships. Companies use the titles loosely; the job description should say which work the role actually does rather than rely on the title.
