What is a talent pool? Definition, how it differs from a pipeline, and what ofper keeps (2026)

A talent pool is a set of candidates a company keeps in reach for future roles, not for a specific open job. How it differs from a hiring pipeline, and why ofper deliberately has no searchable pool.

A talent pool is a group of candidates a company keeps on record for future openings, rather than for a job that is open now.

It differs from a hiring pipeline, which tracks applicants to a specific job through its stages; a pool is what a recruiter reaches into when a new job opens.

ofper has no searchable talent pool across companies, by design: an employer sees only candidates who applied to it or that it added by hand, and the Pool stage on its board is the inbox for new applications to one job, not a talent pool.

Talent pool vs hiring pipeline

A pipeline has a job at the end of it; a pool does not. A candidate in a pipeline is being evaluated for a role and will get an outcome. A candidate in a pool is being kept in case a role appears, and may never hear anything. Products that offer a talent pool are usually recruitment CRMs or sourcing tools, sometimes bundled with an ATS.

What does ofper keep, and what does it not?

ofper keeps every application to a company's jobs, including rejections and screened-out candidates, for that company to look back on. A recruiter can also add candidates by hand who have not applied. Both are visible only to that company.

ofper does not let any employer search the candidates of other employers, or look up a person by email to see where else they applied. A candidate's profile and each company's records of that candidate are kept separate, and nothing is matched or autofilled across that wall. That is a privacy decision, not a missing feature.

Is the Pool stage a talent pool?

No. On ofper's board, Pool is the first stage of a job's pipeline: every new application to that job arrives there unread. It is the inbox for one role, and candidates leave it when someone shortlists or rejects them.

Questions, answered straight

How long should candidates stay in a talent pool?

Only as long as the company has a lawful reason to keep their data, which under most privacy regimes means telling candidates how long and deleting on request. ofper's stated retention policy for applications to closed jobs is twelve months.

Can I search past applicants on ofper?

You can browse your own company's past applications and manually added candidates. There is no cross-company search and no resume database.
