Free applicant tracking system: what you actually get in 2026
Most applicant tracking systems advertise a free plan that stops at one job. Here is what each free ATS plan actually allows, with sources, and what a free ATS cannot do for you.
Last updated 29 August 2026. Competitor pricing and plan limits are re-verified against each vendor’s own pages.
Is there a genuinely free applicant tracking system?
Yes, but the word free is doing different work in different products. Three distinct things get called free: a time-limited trial, a capped free plan that expects you to upgrade, and a product that is free to use at normal volume.
The distinction that matters in practice is how many roles you can hire for at once. A plan limited to one active job works for a company making a single hire and stops working the moment a second role opens, which for most companies is a matter of weeks.
What do free ATS plans actually limit?
The table below states the free-plan limit for each product, taken from the vendor's own pricing page on the date shown. Where a vendor has no free plan, that is stated rather than estimated.
| Product | Free plan | The actual limit |
|---|---|---|
| ofper | Yes | Unlimited jobs, candidates and team members. No paid tier for core recruiting. |
| Breezy HR | Yes (Bootstrap) | 1 active job or candidate pool; candidates accessible for 30 days only. |
| Zoho Recruit | Yes | 1 active job opening, for a single recruiter. |
| BambooHR | No | From $250/month for companies of 25 employees or fewer; ATS capped at 5 job openings on the Core plan. |
| Workable | No | 15-day trial. A job posted during the trial is archived unless you subscribe. |
| Freshteam | Discontinued | Freshworks stopped renewals in March 2026. No longer available. |
What does ofper include for free?
ofper includes unlimited job postings, unlimited candidates and unlimited team members on the free plan, with no credit card and no trial period.
- A Kanban hiring pipeline with stages you name, and a full history of every candidate move
- Resume upload for PDF and DOCX, with the text extracted in your browser to pre-fill the candidate form
- Up to 5 screening questions per job, with knockouts that flag candidates rather than deleting them
- Interview scheduling on your own availability, with confirmations, calendar invites and reminders
- Offer letters with a secure one-time-code acceptance and a permanent record of the outcome
- A public company page and job listings once you verify your domain, which is also free
What can a free ATS not do for you?
This is where free products usually stop being honest, so here is ofper's list. These are real gaps, not roadmap teasers.
- ofper does not post your jobs to Indeed, LinkedIn or other job boards. Breezy HR does this on its free plan, and it is the largest single gap.
- ofper has no AI features: no candidate matching, no resume scoring and no generated job descriptions.
- ofper has no assessments, no video interviewing and no background check integrations.
- ofper has no public API, no webhooks and no Zapier integration.
- ofper has no CSV import or export, so moving a large existing pipeline in is manual work.
- ofper has no hiring reports or analytics beyond a dashboard of what needs doing.
- ofper has no candidate database to search. Employers cannot look up people who have not applied to them, which is a deliberate privacy decision rather than a missing feature.
Who should pay for an ATS instead?
A free ATS is the wrong choice for some teams, and it is cheaper to know that now than after a migration.
- Teams that need job board distribution and will not post to boards manually should look at Breezy HR or Workable.
- Companies that want hiring, employee records, time off and payroll in one system should look at BambooHR.
- Staffing and recruitment agencies need client, submission and placement tracking, which ofper does not have. Zoho Recruit and Bullhorn serve that market.
- Teams running structured interviews with scorecards and interview kits will find ofper too simple.
Questions, answered straight
Is ofper really free?
Yes. ofper is free with unlimited jobs, unlimited candidates and unlimited team members. There is no trial period, no credit card requirement and no paid plan that unlocks core recruiting features.
How can an applicant tracking system be free?
ofper is built to be cheap to run rather than subsidised. There is no AI inference, recruiting email is sent through each company's own mailbox rather than paid for by the platform, and resume text is extracted in the uploader's browser instead of on a server. Each additional company costs very little to serve.
What is the catch with free ATS software?
With most free ATS plans the catch is a cap, usually one active job, sometimes with candidate access expiring after a set period. With ofper the trade-off is feature scope rather than volume: there is no job board distribution, no AI, no integrations and no reporting.
Does a free ATS post my jobs to Indeed and LinkedIn?
ofper does not post jobs to Indeed or LinkedIn. Breezy HR's free plan does distribute to more than 50 job boards, which is the main reason to choose it over ofper if distribution matters more than job volume.
Can I move to a paid ATS later?
Yes, though ofper has no CSV export today, so moving a large pipeline out is manual. If a guaranteed bulk export matters to you, confirm it before you commit either way.
