Accounts Executive job description template (India, 2026)

A Accounts Executive job description written for Indian companies: responsibilities, requirements, CTC and notice-period framing, five screening questions, and the full text to copy or post on ofper.

Last updated 3 September 2026. Competitor pricing and plan limits are re-verified against each vendor’s own pages.

An Accounts Executive is the junior accounts role in an Indian company — data entry, invoicing, expense processing, vendor and customer follow-ups and reconciliation support — working under an Accountant or a Finance Manager and learning the compliance calendar on the job.

A good Accounts Executive job description states what the person will actually do in the first six months, the experience that is genuinely required rather than wished for, the CTC range and how it is split, and the location and working pattern — candidates in India filter on those four things before reading anything else.

The full template is below as plain text to copy, or post it on ofper as a job with the screening questions already attached. ofper is free with unlimited jobs.

What does a Accounts Executive do?

The Accounts Executive is the entry point into an accounts team: the person who enters purchase and sales invoices, raises customer invoices and e-way bills, processes expense claims, chases documents from colleagues and vendors, and prepares the schedules the Accountant reconciles and files from. In a smaller company the same person may also handle petty cash, courier and basic admin.

The role suits a commerce graduate with one to three years of experience, or a strong fresher with Tally training. The job description should be honest that the work is high-volume and detail-driven, and should say what the person will learn — GST, TDS, payroll — since progression is the reason good candidates take the role.

Accounts Executive responsibilities

Written as work the person does, not qualities they have. A responsibility a candidate can picture is one they can decide about.

  • Enter purchase invoices, expense bills and payment vouchers in [Tally / Zoho Books] daily with correct ledgers, GST details and attached documents.
  • Raise customer invoices, e-invoices and e-way bills accurately and on time from sales or dispatch inputs.
  • Process employee expense claims against policy, and maintain the petty cash register and its reconciliation.
  • Collect and file supporting documents — vendor invoices, agreements, approvals — so every entry is audit-ready.
  • Prepare the bank reconciliation working and the vendor and customer ledger statements for the Accountant's review.
  • Follow up with customers on outstanding invoices and with vendors on missing invoices or GST mismatches, keeping a log of each.
  • Support monthly GST, TDS and payroll workings by preparing the underlying schedules.
  • Handle routine bank work — deposits, cheque handling, KYC documents — and basic accounts admin.

Accounts Executive requirements and qualifications

Keep the required list to what you would actually reject a candidate for. Everything else goes under nice to have — a long required list mostly filters out the people you wanted.

  • B.Com or equivalent, with 1 to 3 years in an accounts role; strong freshers with formal Tally training are considered.
  • Working knowledge of Tally Prime or Zoho Books for voucher entry, invoicing and ledger reports.
  • Basic understanding of GST on invoices — rates, GSTIN, place of supply — and of what a compliant invoice contains.
  • Excel at a practical level: sorting, filtering, lookups and simple reconciliations.
  • Accuracy under volume and the habit of keeping documents filed and traceable.
  • Clear written and spoken communication for vendor and customer follow-ups in English and Hindi.

Nice to have

  • Exposure to e-invoicing and e-way bill portals.
  • Experience preparing TDS or GST workings under supervision.
  • Familiarity with an expense or payroll tool.

Salary, CTC and terms for a Accounts Executive in India

State a CTC range. Postings without one get fewer and worse-matched applications, and the range is the first thing an Indian candidate looks for. Say how the CTC is made up — fixed, variable, and any statutory components — so the in-hand figure is not a surprise at offer stage.

  • State the CTC and the in-hand figure, or the split into fixed and statutory components. At this level the in-hand number is the decision, and postings that only state CTC lose candidates at offer.
  • State the working days and hours, and whether month-end needs extra time. Say whether overtime or compensatory leave applies.
  • State that the role is in-office and where; accounts executive roles rarely work remotely because of documents and bank work.
  • Say what the person will learn — GST filing, TDS, payroll — and the progression to Accountant. That line is what makes a good candidate pick this posting over a similar one.

Screening questions for Accounts Executive applicants

Five questions is the ceiling on ofper, and it is the right ceiling: a form that asks more than that costs applications. Use them for the things that decide a shortlist, not for anything the resume already says.

Each question is one of the five screening slots an ofper job allows. Knockouts move an application to Screened out — nothing is deleted.

Questions, answered straight

What is the difference between an Accounts Executive and an Accountant?

In Indian usage an Accounts Executive is the junior role — entries, invoicing, document collection, follow-ups and reconciliation support — while the Accountant owns the close and the statutory filings. The posting should say which, because the titles are used loosely and the candidates are different.

Can a fresher apply for an Accounts Executive job?

Yes, and many companies hire B.Com freshers with Tally training for this role. Say so in the posting, state the training you will provide, and use a screening question on experience to sort rather than exclude.

Should the posting state the in-hand salary?

At this level, yes — or at least the split of CTC into fixed and statutory components. Candidates for junior accounts roles calculate in-hand pay before applying, and a posting that only shows CTC loses them at offer when the number is lower than they assumed.
