Interviewing a Full Stack Developer well means asking about work the candidate has actually done, listening for specifics, and scoring every candidate on the same five criteria. Where in that project did you choose simple over robust, and where the reverse? How did it turn out?
A strong answer: Judgement about where robustness matters — money, data, auth — and where a simple solution is right. This judgement is the role.
What was the worst production problem in that project and how did you handle it?
A strong answer: Operational experience, composure, and a fix that addressed the cause.
Which layer are you weakest in, honestly, and how do you compensate?
A strong answer: Self-awareness. Every full-stack developer has a weaker layer; the useful ones know it and have strategies.

Technical depth across the stack

Design [a small feature in your domain] across the stack: schema, API, UI states, deployment. Think aloud and tell me where the risk is.
A strong answer: Coherent design across layers, explicit edge cases, and identification of the risky part — usually the state transitions or the integration.
Here is a bug report: the page shows stale data after a save. Where could it be and how would you find out?
A strong answer: Considers cache, client state, API response, database transaction — and has a method to narrow it down.
How do you structure a codebase so a second and third engineer can join without a week of explanation?
A strong answer: Conventions, a README that is true, folder structure by domain, tests that document behaviour, and small pull requests.
What would you set up on day one for monitoring and backups, and what would you defer?
A strong answer: Proportionate operations: error tracking, uptime checks, database backups verified by a restore — and honesty about what a three-person team should defer.

Working as an early engineer

The founder wants a feature by Friday that you think needs two weeks. What do you do?
A strong answer: Understands the underlying need, proposes a smaller version that serves it by Friday, and is honest about the rest.
How do you decide between building something and using a managed service or a tool?
A strong answer: Cost, time, control, and whether it is core to the product — with an example either way.
How do you talk to a customer about a feature? Have you done it?
A strong answer: Comfort with direct customer contact, and listening for the problem rather than the requested solution.
What do you want this role to become as the team grows — specialist, lead, architect — and what if it does not?
A strong answer: A realistic ambition and honesty about the risk of an early role. Alignment here reduces churn.

Scorecard for Full Stack Developer interviews
